Heavy Law Enforcement Presence Floods England, AR, Amid Gang-Related Violence Concerns

England, AR – Dozens of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies descended on the small city of England Friday night, January 9, 2026, in a show of force prompted by escalating public safety threats and fears of gang-related violence over the weekend.

England Police Chief Richard Friend issued a memo earlier in the week requesting assistance from surrounding agencies, citing a heightened risk of violence tied to recent incidents and an upcoming funeral.

“We’ve got Arkansas State Police, DEA, ATF, Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office, the Cabot Narcotics Unit, and several other agencies providing assistance,” Chief Friend stated. He described multiple shootings over the past two weeks involving young males armed with firearms actively shooting at one another in residential neighborhoods.

The increased patrols follow investigations into two recent deaths, both involving individuals with gang affiliations. “Unfortunately, both of the deceased had affiliations with gangs,” Friend said, adding that with the first funeral scheduled this weekend, authorities anticipate an influx of gang members that could spark further trouble.

Officers conducted enforcement actions throughout the evening, resulting in several arrests and the towing of multiple vehicles. “I hope it’s quiet,” Friend added. “We want people to know that there is an increased police presence, and we won’t tolerate any criminal activity.”

The visible deployment caught the attention of visitors, including a high school basketball team from Lee High School attending a game in the area. Head basketball coach Vernon Wilson noted, “It kind of startled us a little bit… At first I thought something may be going on. And then I said, well it’s good to have them here, because it makes you feel safe.”

The multi-agency operation underscores ongoing concerns in the community of about 2,900 residents, located in Lonoke County southeast of Little Rock. Authorities emphasized the proactive measures to deter crime and maintain public safety during this period.

The situation remains fluid, with patrols expected to continue as needed. No major incidents were reported during Friday night’s operations.
