Fort Smith, Ark. — The Fort Smith community gathered on Friday to pay tribute to a local hero, Staff Sergeant Gregory Smith, who was awarded the Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice.
Senator John Boozman presented the prestigious medal to Smith, who sustained injuries during a bombing at Al Assad Air Base in Iraq in January 2020. Boozman’s office collaborated closely with Smith and his family to secure the necessary documentation and evidence for the Purple Heart evaluation. After a thorough and lengthy process, the medal was officially authorized.
“One of the most special awards we can give, but sadly his case was such that it fell through the cracks and we were able to work and help get that fixed,” Boozman remarked during the presentation.
In addition to his military service, Smith continues to serve the community as a trooper with the Arkansas State Police. The ceremony highlighted not only Smith’s bravery and dedication but also the ongoing commitment of local leaders to recognize and honor the sacrifices of their constituents.
