Gas Prices Climb in Arkansas Amid Global Oil Supply Disruptions

BATESVILLE — Rising gasoline prices are hitting drivers across Independence County and the rest of Arkansas as global oil markets grapple with major supply disruptions from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The statewide average price for regular unleaded gasoline stood at $4.11 per gallon as of late May, according to AAA data — up more than $1.30 from a year ago and the highest level in four years. Nationally, the average has hovered near $4.42 to $4.60 per gallon in recent weeks.

The sharp increase stems primarily from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following military actions involving the U.S., Israel and Iran that began earlier this year. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and its disruption has reduced Middle East oil exports by millions of barrels per day, tightening worldwide supply.

Crude oil prices have fluctuated but remain elevated, with Brent crude recently trading around $88 to $96 per barrel after earlier spikes above $100. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude has followed a similar pattern.

Local drivers are feeling the impact as summer travel season begins. Higher fuel costs are also contributing to broader inflation pressures in transportation and goods.

Looking ahead, the direction of prices remains uncertain and depends heavily on diplomatic developments. Reports of potential peace talks between the U.S. and Iran have contributed to some recent easing in oil futures, but analysts warn that any breakdown in negotiations could push prices higher.

If the strait reopens and supply flows resume, experts project a possible decline in oil and gas prices later in 2026 as global production from other regions, including increased U.S. output, helps balance the market. However, prolonged disruptions could keep prices elevated through the summer and beyond.

Independence County residents are advised to monitor local stations for competitive pricing and consider fuel-efficient driving habits during the holiday weekend and upcoming summer months.
