LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) announced Thursday it will delay planned furloughs of about 1,500 employees and keep county offices open through at least Nov. 22, allowing continued processing of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The shutdown, now in its 37th day, had threatened to halt SNAP funding starting Nov. 1, prompting initial plans for office closures and staff reductions this Friday. However, new federal funds and two court orders have provided temporary leeway, enabling DHS to maintain operations for SNAP applications, renewals, and other services.
DHS officials stated benefits will be issued “as quickly as possible,” though they could not specify exact dates and warned of potential further impacts if the shutdown persists beyond Nov. 22. The agency also confirmed reduced SNAP payments in some cases due to underfunding.
Arkansas lawmakers met with DHS representatives to discuss the delays and SNAP status, emphasizing the need for resolution in Washington. Residents seeking updates on benefits can contact their local DHS county office or visit humanservices.arkansas.gov.
