Lyon College to Give Back to Community During 31st Annual Service Day on Oct. 22

BATESVILLE, Arkansas — Lyon College will celebrate its 31st Annual Service Day on Tuesday, Oct. 22, bringing together students, faculty and staff to give back to the Batesville and Independence County community through a variety of service projects.

Lyon College Service Day is one of Batesville’s largest single-day service initiatives, with more than three dozen service project sites throughout the city and Independence County. It provides students with an opportunity to come together to learn more about the needs of the community and to introduce students to volunteer opportunities and community service.

Classes will not meet during the day to allow everyone on campus to participate in the day of service.

The campus community will gather at 8:30 a.m. at the back steps of Brown Chapel and Fine Arts Building for a kickoff ceremony featuring remarks from Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner and Batesville Mayor Rick Elumbaugh. A blessing for all participants will follow before groups depart for their assigned work sites.

“Service Day reminds us that our success as a college is deeply connected to the broader community we are privileged to serve,” said Rev. Maggie Alsup, Lyon College chaplain and director of service. “As students work alongside faculty and staff, it is our hope that they gain an appreciation of service and take steps in their lives to become service-minded young adults. While Service Day is just one day, it is our hope that through participating, students may implement service throughout their lives here at Lyon and after Lyon.”

Following the morning’s service projects, participants are invited to return to campus for a community lunch.
