Gov. Sarah Sanders declares state of emergency for Arkansas ahead of potential winter weather

Gov. Sarah Sanders declared a state of emergency for the state of Arkansas in anticipation of possible winter weather.

The governor says winter weather is expected to hit Arkansas on Sunday and could result in dangers, hardships and suffering throughout the state.

Sanders says there could be a need for commercial vehicles to haul heavy equipment, oversized loads, transformers and other equipment required to restore utility services to Arkansans.

Sanders says the possible winter weather could also lead to a backlog in deliveries of essential items transported by commercial vehicles.

The state of emergency remains in effect until Jan. 13.

NO NEED TO PANIC:

A state of emergency/disaster is a declaration by a government that allows it to take actions to protect its citizens that it normally wouldn’t be able to.

When a state of emergency is declared, the government is given the authority to:

-Speed up assistance to communities in need.

-Make resources available for rescue, evacuation, shelter, and essential commodities.

-Quell disturbances in affected areas.

-Seek federal assistance.
