Dierks High School Claims $1 Million Victory in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Contest

Dierks High School Claims Million Victory in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Contest

DIERKS, Ark. – In a stunning upset for a town of just 900 residents, Dierks High School was crowned the grand prize winner Thursday morning of T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition, securing a $1 million stadium transformation that will revitalize the Outlaws’ home field and athletic facilities.

The announcement, delivered live by former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski during a packed watch party in the school gymnasium, capped an intense nationwide voting push that saw Dierks amass nearly 2 million votes—outpacing more than 2,100 applicant schools. As the sole Arkansas entry in the top 25 finalists, the school had already pocketed $25,000 for its compelling application essay highlighting the community’s deep-rooted football passion and the need for upgrades to the aging Ayers Field.

Now in its second year, the contest celebrates small-town high school football spirit, with over 8 million votes cast across all finalists. Dierks edged out close rival Lebanon High School in Oregon, which garnered nearly 1.5 million votes backed by endorsements from Steelers wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins and country artist Jessie Leigh.

The prize package, valued at $1 million, includes a comprehensive home field upgrade to modernize the stadium—addressing longstanding issues like an eight-foot slope from one end zone to the other—a full renovation of the weight room by Gronk Fitness, expert consultation on stadium enhancements, and a massive tailgate reveal party in 2026. Additionally, 16 school representatives will enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 6 in Atlanta.

“This win is about more than just a field—it’s proof that small-town grit and community heart can go toe-to-toe with anyone,” said Ulf Ewaldsson, T-Mobile President of Technology Innovation. “Dierks High School’s story of unity and determination embodies the unbreakable spirit of Friday night lights across America.”

Head Football Coach Paul Ernest echoed the sentiment, addressing the cheering crowd of students, staff, and locals. “What makes this win so special is how seen our community feels,” he said. “In a small town, kids sometimes hear it’s time to give up those big dreams. But this win from T-Mobile tells them the opposite—it says it’s okay to keep dreaming, to keep fighting for those astronaut and rock star moments. And that’s a beautiful thing.”

The victory drew statewide support, including shoutouts from Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former Razorbacks and NFL running back Darren McFadden, comedians Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy, NASCAR driver Austin Dillon, and ex-University of Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones. For over 20 years, Ayers Field had lacked major updates, making the win a generational boost for Dierks’ youth athletics.

T-Mobile and the school have scheduled a community celebration for Nov. 14 to kick off planning. As the Outlaws prepare for their next home game, the $1 million infusion promises to elevate Friday nights under the lights, turning a modest field into a beacon of pride for Howard County.
