BATESVILLE, Ark. — A Cold Weather Advisory will take effect Saturday morning across much of Arkansas, with wind chills expected to fall to -5 to -10 degrees in northern portions of the state and near 0 to -5 degrees across central and southern areas.
The advisory accompanies another surge of Arctic air that will prolong freezing conditions through the weekend, offering little opportunity for melting of any remaining snow or ice. Primary roads have largely been cleared following the recent winter storm, but rural roads, neighborhood streets, and secondary routes may remain hazardous due to repeated thaw-freeze cycles and potential black ice formation.
Overnight tonight into early Saturday, light snow or flurries are possible, with the best chances for accumulations in north-central to east-central Arkansas. Those areas could see a dusting to a few tenths of an inch, while much of the rest of the state may experience only scattered flurries or a wintry mix.
The National Weather Service warns that the combination of dangerously cold wind chills and lingering slick spots increases risks for frostbite, hypothermia, and travel difficulties. Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and use caution on untreated surfaces.
Local officials in Independence County and surrounding areas continue to monitor conditions, with updates available through the National Weather Service Little Rock office and regional emergency management channels. Motorists should check road conditions before traveling and allow extra time if venturing out during the advisory period.
