Batesville’s Commitment to Safer Sidewalks: Progress and Plans for a More Accessible City

Batesville is taking bold steps to enhance its sidewalk network, ensuring safer and more accessible pathways for pedestrians, wheelchair users, and all residents. The city is prioritizing connectivity and inclusivity through its ambitious 2025 Master Street Plan, addressing concerns about incomplete sidewalks in areas like Westside, and downtown.

Residents have shared their hopes for a more walkable Batesville. Karen Humbrecht from Southside emphasized the need for sidewalks, saying, “For people with wheelchairs and people with no vehicles, we’re in dire need of better access.” Sarah Harkey highlighted the community benefits, noting, “Sidewalks are better for health, for workers without transportation, and promote community.” Heather K. Clark pointed out specific areas needing improvement, describing Main Street’s sidewalks and spots near Riverside Park as “very unsafe.” James Atkinson from Westside added that drainage issues exacerbate challenges, stating, “Every time it rains heavy, it floods… sidewalks need attention before someone gets hurt.” Donna Lannings Bales observed, “Main Street has unused bicycle lanes, but we need good sidewalks too.” Scott Prah suggested combining sidewalks with public bus stops to better serve those without cars.

The city is listening and acting. The 2025 Master Street Plan outlines a clear vision for expanding multi-modal facilities, prioritizing sidewalks and trails to create a seamless network connecting downtown, neighborhoods, and key destinations like shops and schools. Recent projects demonstrate this commitment. In July 2024, Batesville began constructing a bike and pedestrian trail along Main Street, repurposing a former traffic lane into a dedicated path starting at 12th and Main. A downtown trail, nearing completion as of October 2024, will make the area more inviting for walkers and cyclists. The Myers Street widening project, completed in September 2025 with the city’s first roundabout, sets the stage for further pedestrian enhancements. The Batesville Street Scape initiative is actively adding new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and multi-purpose trails across the city.

Looking ahead, the “Building a Better Batesville” campaign and the Riverside Park renovation, set for completion in December 2026, promise to integrate accessible pathways, ensuring that wheelchair users and pedestrians can navigate safely. These efforts aim to address uneven surfaces, missing ramps, and drainage issues, creating a more inclusive environment for all.

While there’s more work to do, Batesville’s ongoing projects reflect a dedication to meeting residents’ needs. City officials encourage community input to shape future improvements, inviting feedback through the city’s website or the Department of Public Works. With the 2025 Master Street Plan guiding the way, Batesville is on track to become a safer, more connected community where everyone can move freely and confidently.
