MIDLAND, Texas — One person was killed and 10 others were injured Friday morning when a gunman opened fire in Midland, authorities said, in an incident that ended with the suspect dead following a standoff with police.
The shooting occurred around 8 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Wall Street. Responding officers heard gunfire from a building, and the suspect fired on police and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal of Odessa. He had been wanted by authorities after allegedly shooting at a Midland police officer during a chase earlier in the week, officials said.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed at a press conference that one victim died at the scene and nine others were hospitalized. Several victims underwent surgery at Midland Memorial Hospital, while some in stable condition have been discharged.
Law enforcement surrounded the area and engaged in an hours-long standoff. Officers found Villarreal dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 12:30 p.m., ending the active shooter situation.
Roads in the area remained closed as investigators processed the scene, with closures potentially lasting 24 to 48 hours. Authorities urged the public to avoid the southwestern part of the city during the response.
This is a developing story. The Batesville Tribune will provide updates as more information becomes available from authorities.
