BATESVILLE, Ark. — Members of VFW Post 4501, Scout Troop 4501, Independence County 4-H and other local volunteers placed more than 1,000 American flags at three Independence County cemeteries to honor military veterans ahead of Memorial Day.

At Campground Cemetery in Bethesda, volunteers placed flags at 161 veterans’ graves. The historic cemetery is the final resting place for service members from the Civil War (both Union and Confederate), Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm.
An additional 862 flags were placed at Oaklawn Cemetery and Rose Lawn Cemetery in honor of fallen service members.
VFW Post 4501 coordinated the efforts with support from Scout Troop 4501, Independence County 4-H, Sharon Phillips, Randy Bersitt and the VFW Post 4501 Auxiliary.
The flag placements serve as a visible tribute to local veterans and a community tradition to remember their service and sacrifice.
