WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced Wednesday that she will not seek reelection and will retire from Congress at the end of her current term in January 2027.

Pelosi, 85, has represented California’s 11th Congressional District since 1987. She served as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023, the first woman to hold the position. During her tenure, she oversaw passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 and presided over two impeachments of former President Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021.

In a statement, Pelosi said, “It’s time for a new generation to lead.” She plans to continue advocacy work on issues including women’s rights and democracy after leaving office.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom described Pelosi as a “trailblazer” in a statement. President Joe Biden called her an “icon of American politics” and said she helped “bring people together.”

Pelosi’s retirement will trigger an election for her seat in the Democratic-leaning district. Potential candidates have not yet been announced.
