BATESVILLE, Arkansas – The Lyon College Scottish Heritage Program and Convocation Committee will present “An Afternoon with Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman,” a world-renowned harp and acoustic guitar duo, on Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in the Bevens Music Room, Brown Fine Arts Building at Lyon College, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.
The concert, sponsored by Renate Rosenthal in memory of her late husband, Robert L. Campbell, is free and open to the public.
In addition to the concert, a special masterclass for interested students, faculty and community members will be held on Monday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Bevens Music Room.
About the Artists
Ní Chathasaigh is one of Ireland’s most influential traditional musicians, renowned for her groundbreaking work in Celtic harp music. She was honored as Traditional Musician of the Year – Gradam Ceoil TG4 in 2001 for her pioneering contributions to the Irish harp tradition.
Her innovative techniques have redefined the instrument’s role in traditional Irish music, and her recordings set new standards in the field. Ní Chathasaigh has performed at prestigious events worldwide, including the World Harp Congress, Swiss Harp Festival and Rio Harp Festival.
Chris Newman is a virtuoso acoustic guitarist celebrated for his mastery of folk, jazz and bluegrass. He has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Stéphane Grappelli, Boys of the Lough and Aly Bain, earning international acclaim for his compositions and performances.
Newman’s decades-long career spans producing hit records to performing on BBC’s “Top of the Pops” before dedicating himself to traditional and improvisational music.
