Arkansas Governor Announces $15 Million in Grants for Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Disability Services

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, alongside the Arkansas Department of Human Services, announced the allocation of $15 million in grants aimed at improving infrastructure for individuals with substance use disorders, mental illnesses, and intellectual disabilities.

The initiative will provide grants to support Youth Substance Abuse Residential Treatment and Supported Housing Units for Young Adults, with awards set to be distributed later this summer. Governor Sanders emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating, “Vulnerable Arkansans need help – and they deserve to receive that help in modern, well-functioning facilities. As my administration supports our most at-risk citizens, these grants will build a continuity of care that helps Arkansans through every step of their lives.”

The grants are divided into several categories to address different needs across the state:

  3. Supported Housing Units for Young Adults Grant: This grant funds the construction of an apartment complex designed to house young adults with behavioral health challenges who have aged out of group homes or other services provided by the Division of Children and Family Services or the Division of Youth Services.
    • Rainbow of Challenges, Inc., Hope – $3 million
  4. Therapeutic Communities for Adults with IDD Grant: This grant supports the creation of a 16-bed therapeutic community for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities and co-occurring behavioral health diagnoses, providing step-down support from high-cost inpatient psychiatric care.
