Stone County, AR – A 13-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting incident early Saturday evening, leading to the arrest of a local man on multiple charges.
Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long reported that Steven Alan Gill, 60, has been taken into custody and faces charges including two counts of aggravated assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on August 31 in the Luber area of Stone County. Deputies responding to the scene discovered that the teenager had been shot in the neck with a .22-caliber rifle. Emergency medical personnel provided initial care before airlifting the victim to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock for further treatment.
Gill was apprehended shortly after the shooting for questioning. According to a report by Mountain Home radio station KTLO, Gill initially told investigators that he had been “firing toward a couple of dogs near his private pond.” However, Sheriff Long indicated that subsequent evidence gathered by detectives did not align with Gill’s account, leading to his arrest.
Sheriff Long noted that the investigation is ongoing and that charges against Gill may be adjusted or additional charges may be filed pending further review by the prosecuting attorney. As of now, no bond has been set for Gill.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
