Spotlight: Sheriff Shawn Stephens Seeks Re-Election in Independence County

BATESVILLE, Ark. — Incumbent Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens, a lifelong resident of the county, is running for re-election in the Republican primary on March 3, 2026, emphasizing proven leadership, integrity and community service.

Stephens was first elected sheriff in 2017 and has served in law enforcement in Independence County for more than 25 years. He began as a reserve officer for six years before becoming a full-time officer, accumulating two decades of active duty experience by the time of his 2025 campaign announcement. He was re-elected in previous cycles and now faces challenger Susan Baxter in the primary.

Born and raised in Independence County, Stephens describes himself as a “true working sheriff” committed to protecting and serving the community with transparency and fairness. His campaign highlights unmatched law enforcement experience, a deep connection to local residents and a focus on justice for all. Supporters have praised his dedication to citizens’ safety and proactive approach to county needs.

As sheriff, Stephens oversees law enforcement operations across Independence County, including patrol services for unincorporated areas and the City of Southside through an interlocal agreement.
