Murder Charge Dropped in Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Shooting Case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri prosecutors dropped a second-degree murder charge Monday against Dominic M. Miller, one of the men accused in the 2024 Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade and rally shooting that killed radio host Lisa Lopez-Galvan and injured more than 20 others.

Miller, now 20, pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to one count of unlawful use of a weapon, a Class E felony. He was sentenced to two years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, with credit for time already served since his arrest. Prosecutors said Miller has been in custody for more than two years and is expected to be released soon.

The shooting occurred Feb. 14, 2024, near Union Station at the end of the Chiefs’ victory celebration for Super Bowl LVIII. Court records indicate the incident stemmed from an argument between groups, with multiple people firing guns. Prosecutors initially alleged Miller fired the fatal shot that killed Lopez-Galvan, 43, a bystander attending with her family.

In dropping the murder charge, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office cited Missouri’s self-defense and defense-of-others laws, stating the evidence could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Miller was the initial aggressor or that his shot definitively caused the death. The office consulted with Lopez-Galvan’s family throughout the process.

Family members of Lopez-Galvan addressed the court, expressing their loss and hoping for remorse and change from Miller. In response, Miller stated he was remorseful, never intended for the incident to occur and would pray for the family.

The prosecutor’s office emphasized continued commitment to accountability under the law, noting other cases from the shooting remain pending, including trials for co-defendants Lyndell Mays and Terry Young.

Three juveniles charged in the incident are being handled in family court.

No local Independence County ties were reported in connection with the case or plea agreement.
