Batesville, AR – Batesville’s own Gage Wood, a standout pitcher for the University of Arkansas, officially signed a $3 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on July 22, 2025, marking a historic moment for the local community. Selected as the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft, the 21-year-old right-hander is set to begin his professional career with the Single-A Clearwater Threshers in Florida.
Wood, a Batesville High School graduate, gained national attention in June 2025 by throwing the third no-hitter in College World Series history against Murray State, striking out a record-setting 19 batters in a 3-0 victory. Despite a shoulder impingement that sidelined him for nearly two months during the 2025 season, Wood finished his junior year at Arkansas with a 4-1 record, a 3.82 ERA, and 69 strikeouts over 37.2 innings. His electric fastball, reaching the upper 90s, and power curveball caught the eye of Phillies scouts, who see him as a starting pitcher with potential for rapid development.
“It’s a blessing,” Wood said during his visit to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where he met players and manager Rob Thomson. “I’ve worked my whole life for this, and I’m ready to get going.” The Phillies’ general manager, Preston Mattingly, praised Wood’s four-pitch arsenal, noting room for improvement in his slider and changeup, but emphasized, “We view him as a starter.”
Batesville Mayor Rick Elumbaugh expressed the community’s pride, stating, “There’s a lot of Batesville residents who became Phillies fans overnight.” Wood joins an elite group of local athletes, including NASCAR legend Mark Martin, in achieving national prominence. City leaders are considering honoring Wood with a Key to the City, recognizing his journey from Little League to professional baseball.
Wood’s path began at Batesville High School, where he earned All-State honors in 2022 and was ranked the No. 3 prospect in Arkansas by Perfect Game. At Arkansas, he transitioned from a freshman closer with five saves to a dominant starter, earning spots on the Fayetteville Regional and College World Series All-Tournament Teams. His no-hitter, a 119-pitch masterpiece, remains a defining moment for both Wood and the Razorbacks.
As Wood heads to Clearwater to begin his professional journey, Batesville celebrates a hometown hero whose perseverance and talent have put the city on the national stage. For updates on Wood’s career or to share community news, contact the Batesville Tribune.
