Cave City Watermelon Festival Returns July 23-25 for 46th Year

CAVE CITY — The Cave City Watermelon Festival will celebrate its 46th year July 23-25, drawing visitors to the Independence County community for three days of family-friendly events centered on the area’s renowned watermelons.

The annual event, which began in 1980, is billed as the largest festival in the region and has been recognized as one of Arkansas’ best. Organizers say it honors the “world’s sweetest watermelons” while highlighting local people, businesses and community spirit.

Events kick off Thursday, July 23, with vendors and food trucks opening at 5 p.m. A kiddie parade through the park for children 12 and under is set for 6 p.m., followed by performer Danelle Johnson. The evening includes Cave City’s “Sweetest Voice” talent competition at 8 p.m.

Friday, July 24, begins early with a children’s fishing derby at 7:30 a.m. in the city park for ages 12 and under. Other activities include a Wiffle Ball home run derby at 10 a.m., the start of Food Truck Wars at 11 a.m., and performances by Rockin’ Luke Stroud and Simply Southern Cloggers on the First Community Bank Melon Stage. Additional events feature a load the wagon competition, Kiwanis Craft & Confections Fair, watermelon speed eating, a car cruise and headliner Confederate Railroad at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 25, opens with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at First Baptist Church from 6-10 a.m. and the Melon Dash 5K at 7 a.m. The festival parade steps off at 10 a.m. with Grand Marshals Gary Johnson and Phillip Johnson of Johnson Brothers Watermelons. A car show, additional performances by Garrett Duncan, MAC, Tyler Kinch and others, watermelon contests, a free watermelon feast at 4 p.m. and the prize melon auction at 5 p.m. round out the day.

All concerts are free thanks to sponsor support. Other highlights include kids’ activities, a school alumni reunion and special events at local businesses throughout Cave City.
