Brawl Erupts After Barton-England High School Basketball Game in Poyen

POYEN — A large brawl involving players, fans and spectators broke out at the conclusion of a Class 2A boys state tournament semifinal basketball game between Barton High School and England High School on Saturday at Poyen High School, prompting a criminal investigation by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The game ended with Barton declared the winner 52-51 after chaos erupted in the final seconds. As the clock hit zero amid confusion over a foul call and fans rushing the court, an England player threw a punch at a celebrating Barton player, sparking a bench-clearing melee that spilled into the stands and required intervention by administrators, law enforcement including Grant County deputies, Arkansas State Police and Sheridan officers to restore order.

The Arkansas Activities Association is also investigating the incident, which occurred during the state tournament semifinals. No specific injuries were reported in initial accounts, but the fight involved an extremely large crowd from both schools.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday it has opened a criminal investigation and will pursue charges against those involved. No arrests or specific charges had been detailed as of early this week.

This marks the second altercation between the two schools this season, following a previous game that ended early due to a fight three months prior.

The Barton team advanced to the 2A championship game against Mount Vernon-Enola following the ruling.

No direct connection to Independence County schools or residents was reported in the incident.
