FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old second-year player, died early Thursday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase and vehicle crash, according to the Frisco Police Department.
The incident began around 10:39 p.m. Wednesday when Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop Kneeland’s vehicle for a traffic violation on a highway in Collin County. Kneeland fled, initiating a pursuit that ended when his car crashed. He escaped the scene on foot, prompting a search by local law enforcement.
Kneeland was located deceased at 1:31 a.m. near the crash site, with what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death, but preliminary findings indicate suicide. No other individuals were involved, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Cowboys issued a statement Thursday: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.” The team has made counseling available to players and staff.
Kneeland, drafted 168th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University, appeared in four games this season, recording one tackle. In college, he earned All-MAC honors with 10 sacks in 2023. Prior to the NFL, he grew up in Detroit and played at Godwin Heights High School.
During the search, officers received reports that Kneeland might be suicidal, per police audio reviewed by outlets like the New York Post. His girlfriend expressed concerns to authorities that he was armed and might harm himself.
The NFL Players Association and the league have not yet commented, but mental health resources are available through the NFL Lifeline at 1-800-506-0850. Kneeland’s death marks another tragic loss in the sports world, highlighting ongoing conversations about athlete well-being.
