BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Human Services has advised that November SNAP benefits for over 222,000 residents could face delays or disruptions if the federal government shutdown continues, urging recipients to prepare for potential gaps starting Nov. 1.
DHS’s Oct. 22 alert, echoed by USDA guidance, states that while October benefits were funded in September, November payments require new appropriations now stalled by the budget impasse. The USDA confirmed Oct. 27 that it will not tap $6 billion in contingency funds, posting: “The well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01.” This reversal from earlier plans affects 42 million nationwide, including Arkansas families.
DHS is coordinating with food banks but cannot guarantee issuance without federal action. The shutdown, now in its fourth week, may also delay new applications and renewals, though recipients should continue submitting paperwork.
- Average monthly benefit per person: $187
- Arkansans receiving SNAP: Approximately 222,000
- Total households served: Over 110,000
DHS urges recipients to:
- Use any remaining October benefits before they expire to buy shelf-stable foods.
- Report lost or stolen EBT cards immediately at 1-800-997-9999.
- Visit local food pantries if additional support is needed (find locations at ArkansasFoodbank.org).
