BATESVILLE, Ark. — The Realtors Relief Foundation has opened applications for grants to support Arkansas homeowners and renters in Independence County whose primary residences were damaged by recent severe storms. This initiative aims to provide financial assistance to those facing housing challenges in the wake of the disaster, offering a lifeline to affected residents.
Homeowners qualify if their primary residence sustained storm damage and they either pay a mortgage or own the home outright. Renters are eligible only if they were displaced from their storm-damaged residence, requiring proof such as a new lease agreement or temporary housing receipts. Damage to secondary structures like fences, sheds, or detached garages does not qualify, nor do renters who remain in their homes. All applicants must provide proof of residency and photographs documenting the damage, with incomplete applications facing rejection.
Applications are available through the Independence County Office of Emergency Management by contacting Director Bill Johnson at (870) 793-8816, or soon at the Cushman Fire Department. While the program addresses critical housing needs, its strict eligibility criteria—excluding non-displaced renters and secondary structures—may limit access for some, raising questions about whether the aid fully meets the diverse impacts of the storms.

Separately, the American Red Cross is establishing Disaster Assistance Centers to assist those affected by recent tornadoes, flooding, and severe weather. A center in Hardy will open today, May 7, 2025, at the Historic Old Hardy Gym, 201 School Ave., from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with additional locations in West Memphis and Little Rock opening later this week. Individuals can explore eligibility for Red Cross financial assistance at www.redcross.org/gethelp or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
For those grappling with emotional distress, the Disaster Distress Helpline offers free, confidential support at 1-800-985-5990. The American Red Cross also welcomes donations to bolster disaster relief efforts, which can be made at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767).
This combined effort highlights a community-driven response to the storms, though the narrow scope of the Realtors Relief Foundation’s criteria may leave some residents seeking alternative support through the Red Cross or other channels.
