Following the unfortunate passing of Mayor Keith Sutton, a gathering convened at Pocahontas City Hall on Thursday to address the ensuing developments.
During the meeting, the city council took a vote to designate Keith Futrell as the interim mayor. Additionally, the council decided to conduct a special election in May to select someone to complete the remainder of Mayor Sutton’s term.
Mayor Sutton, aged 60, passed away on December 24 at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Pocahontas Fire Chief Scott Baltz, a longtime friend of Mayor Sutton, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Devastated, to say the least. We’re going to try and carry on and do what he wanted us to do.”
Baltz revealed that Mayor Sutton had been grappling with health issues, including cancer, which eventually led to his demise. Reflecting on the mayor’s legacy and dedication to the community, Baltz recounted moments when he accompanied Sutton for early morning chemotherapy sessions, only for the mayor to return and diligently serve the city.
Acting Mayor and City Clerk Michelle Teel echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Mayor Sutton’s vision for enhancing the quality of life for both city residents and those beyond its limits.
“He just wanted to provide something the community could use as a whole and that others could come to Pocahontas and enjoy as well. It was a labor of love,” Teel remarked.
Teel expressed the hope that whoever assumes Sutton’s long-term role would share his priorities and compassionate approach to city affairs.
The visitation, hosted by McNabb Funeral Home, took place on Thursday, December 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service is scheduled for the following day at 10 a.m. at the Randolph County Development Center on the Black River Technical College Campus.
To honor Mayor Sutton’s passing, the city announced via Facebook that offices would be closed on Friday, allowing city associates and the community to attend the memorial service.
