Jonesboro Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Threatening to Shoot Up Home

JONESBORO, Ark. – A 24-year-old Jonesboro man, Kydarius Detraveon Kennedy, has been sentenced to three years in prison after threatening to shoot up a residence with an AR-15-style rifle. The sentencing took place on Monday, Sept. 9, with Second Judicial Circuit Judge Randy Philhours presiding.

Kennedy received a 36-month sentence in the Arkansas Department of Corrections following a guilty plea for possession of a firearm by certain persons. In addition, he was given a suspended imposition of sentence (SIS) of 36 months, meaning he will serve additional time if he violates his probation. For a separate charge of terroristic threatening in the first degree, Kennedy was sentenced to 72 months SIS. A charge of aggravated residential burglary was dismissed.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 9, when officers responded to reports of an armed individual at a residence on French Street. According to the affidavit, a woman at the home was confronted by Kennedy after another woman accused her of having “some property.” Police noticed that the victim’s hands were bleeding and shaking when they arrived at the scene.

Shortly after the confrontation, Kennedy showed up at the residence armed with a large gun, which the victim identified as an AR-15-style rifle. The victim warned others inside not to let him in, but Kennedy forced his way into the home and began yelling at her. When she asked him to leave, he punched her in the face.

Kennedy then exited the home, shouting threats that he would “shoot up the residence” before getting into his vehicle and driving away. Officers quickly obtained a description of Kennedy’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. During the stop, they found the AR-15-style rifle inside his vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that Kennedy was on probation with prior felony convictions. A probation search was conducted following his arrest.

Kennedy’s sentence serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for firearm-related crimes, particularly for those with previous convictions.
