BATESVILLE, Ark. – A Batesville man was arrested Monday night after allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting an Independence County sheriff’s deputy.
According to court documents filed Wednesday in Independence County Circuit Court, Deputy Keashawn Robinson was patrolling Dry Run Circle around 8 p.m. when he encountered a 2018 Ford F-150 stopped in the middle of the road.
Robinson waited approximately two minutes behind the truck before activating his patrol vehicle’s blue lights. The driver, identified as 64-year-old Victor McCurry Chatman, then pulled into the driveway of a residence on Dry Run Circle.
As Deputy Robinson approached, Chatman exited the truck but initially refused to provide his name or driver’s license, the affidavit states. After eventually handing over his license, Chatman declined to provide vehicle registration or proof of insurance.
When Robinson ordered Chatman to turn around and place his hands behind his back, Chatman refused. According to the affidavit, he then struck Deputy Robinson in the face, leaving the officer momentarily dazed.
A physical altercation followed, during which Chatman allegedly resisted and struck Robinson a second time. Chatman eventually complied and was taken into custody.
Chatman faces charges of felony second-degree battery and three misdemeanor offenses, including resisting arrest. His bond was set at $20,000.
The case will proceed to court in the coming weeks. No further injuries were reported during the incident.
