Arkansas Department of Education Secures $3.6 Million Grant to Enhance Educator Data Literacy and Improve Student Learning

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) has been awarded a substantial $3.6 million grant aimed at empowering educators to leverage assessment data to enhance instruction and boost student learning outcomes. This funding comes through the U.S. Department of Education’s Competitive Grants for State Assessments program, which supports states in developing and implementing high-quality assessments to improve teaching, measure student progress, and ultimately elevate educational standards.

Arkansas is among ten states selected for this grant, which will significantly bolster the state’s ability to support educators in interpreting and utilizing assessment data. ADE Secretary Jacob Oliva expressed his enthusiasm for the grant, noting its importance in advancing data literacy among Arkansas educators. “We are pleased to receive this grant to improve data literacy among educators in Arkansas,” Oliva said. “As we prepare to release test scores next month from the new assessment administered this spring, the grant will help us provide ongoing support to educators to assist with understanding the results and using them to guide student learning.”

The grant aligns with Arkansas’ commitment under the LEARNS initiative to support educators in delivering effective instruction and aiding struggling learners. With the funding, the ADE plans to undertake several key initiatives:

  • Pilot Programs: Partner with selected districts to test and refine new teaching and assessment practices.
  • Professional Learning: Develop professional development opportunities that enable educators to interpret and apply test data to enhance instruction and student learning.
  • Collaboration: Strengthen collaboration among educators to foster effective data sharing and usage.
  • Statewide Expansion: Expand the program to cover schools across the state.
  • Micro-Credentials: Create micro-credentials in data and assessment literacy for educators, providing additional qualifications that can be added to their professional licenses.
